Cultural Characteristics
Soccer is the most popular sport in Istanbul, which has many stadiums for soccer in the city. Two very popular clubs in Istanbul are Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, as you can see with the picture to the left, a Fenerbahce game, the fans are dedicated to the sport. Other recreational activities include going out to tea shops are a popular way to socialize in Istanbul.
Celebrating major events and living with your family until you are finically independent is typical in a country like Istanbul which values family. In Istanbul, there are gender roles with the wife cleaning and cooking while the husband goes out to work. For vacations, wealthy people in Istanbul go to coastal cities near Turkey for the winter. Istanbul is surprising diverse compared to the rest of Turkey which is 99% Muslim. Istanbul is still by a long margin predominantly Muslim, but there are small groups of Jewish and Christians in the city. Istanbul has a big minority of Kurdish people, with minorities being a sore subject because of the Kurdish riots.
